The League City “Artists in Residency” is a pilot program that began in May 2025, which provides three local artists with a free space and inspiring environment to produce works of the creative imagination. The program is part of League City’s overall Public Art Initiative, which aims to create a “sense of place” for residents and visitors to League City through public art and to expand opportunities for citizens to enjoy and experience firsthand the visual and performing arts.

In exchange for free studio space at the Ghirardi House—a historic building located at Heritage Park—the artists teach a minimum of three classes over a period of nine months. The classes are free to League City residents, available to a variety of age groups, and offered as part of the City’s library and recreational programming. During their residency, the artists also participate in open house and gallery events that are open to the public.

Artists chosen for the program undergo a rigorous selection process that requires them to show examples of their work, explain how they would benefit from the program, provide letters of recommendation, and describe the types of classes and workshops they would provide the community as part of their residency. City staff, along with members of the Keep League City Beautiful Committee—a citizen group appointed by the Mayor—have the tough job of selecting the three artists.

Participants in the Artists in Residency program are also provided with mentors during their residency which include professional artists, former art professors and teachers, and members of the business and entrepreneurship community.
