I’m always on the hunt for new beer and new breweries. I have visited most every brewery within a two- hour radius of my home, but on occasion, I will discover a new brewery within driving distance that just opened, or one that has been open but somehow flew under my radar. A good example of the latter is Backyard Brewing in the south Houston suburb of Dickinson. Backyard Brewing is located inside an industrial warehouse area, toward the back, where it shares its space with similarly – sized businesses. The interior is small, with just a few places to sit. The outside has some additional lawn style seats and tables, which is exactly what you need to produce a backyard type of atmosphere. For a small brewery, Backyard Brewing does have a respectable number of beers on tap. When I visited, I counted about ten beers and a hard seltzer. I tried most every one of them. One of the standouts was the Festbier, which was true to style, easy drinking, and light but flavorful. I also took a liking to a specialty beer they had on tap when I was there, Lazy Dags Crème Brulee Imperial Milk Stout. Most of the other beers were agreeable, but these were the standouts. If you want food, be sure to check before you arrive because, while Backyard Brewing doesn’t have its own kitchen, it is common to find food trucks here, serving beer- compatible grub to complete the experience. It can get quite toasty if you visit Backyard Brewing during the warmer times of the year, like I did, so be prepared to accept that. It’s not a fantastic type of place appearance- wise, but I like Backyard Brewing for its from-the-bootstraps efforts. It’s not easy to start a new brewery from scratch and not easy to make it a success. But Backyard Brewing is doing what it can to rise up the ranks in the Houston craft beer scene. If you like a non- pretentious, friendly type of place for beer, then pay Backyard Brewing a visit. You just might like what you see and taste.
