Armand Bayou Nature Center
With 2,500 acres of protected natural wetlands, forest, prairie and marsh environment, Armand Bayou Nature Center is one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the country. The center allows hundreds of animal species and thousands of native plants to thrive. Visitors are invited to get away from the busy city and immerse themselves in nature at ABNC through hiking, paddle trails, bayou cruises, canoe trips, and other unique outdoor experiences. See indigenous wildlife like American alligators, hawks, river otters, white-tail deer, turtles and more. Say hello to the resident bison that graze one of ABNC’s prairies, or get an up-close view of spiders and snakes at the facility’s education center.
The site is one of the top birding locations in the Galveston Bay area and attracts bird enthusiasts from all over the world. The center also features the restored 1890s Martyn Family Farm, where guests can experience life as it was on a 19th-century farm in Southeast Texas through live demonstrations.

Oct 15, 2026 · Google ReviewMy husband and I wanted to see something at Houston that was not city and population. Armand Bayou Nature Center offered this. The first thing you see when you arrive is a gift shop where you pay a small fee to enter further. You are greeted by friendly staff! We walked out and watched Buffalo roaming in their enclosure. There were several nice picnic tables for sitting and enjoying lunch. We did not get to see everything because we showed up later in the day and they stop letting people enter after 4pm. We will be back and next time , we will be there in the A.M.. VERY PLEASED WITH THIS PLACE!
Oct 6, 2026 · Google ReviewConvenient place to slip away from the city but right in the middle of things. Love the scenery, quiet trails, with forest, bayou and prairie views. The trails are easy to walk and the family farm history is cool too. I wish the buffalo could roam in the open prairie rather their smaller pen, but still nice to see.
Mar 14, 2026 · Google ReviewHad a really great outing. The volunteers are very informative and friendly! There was so much animal activity. There’s plenty to learn about and see that we ran out of time. I look forward to coming back for the platoon tour!
Apr 26, 2026 · Google ReviewSuch a cool place! Doesn’t even feel like it’s in a city, it’s so quiet and peaceful. The staff were friendly and helpful. The trails are easily walkable and the wildlife exhibits are awesome and well maintained, it’s very apparent they take pride in their work. I’d recommend coming earlier in the day to take full advantage of all the walking trails. I will definitely be back!
